David Collins is a highly accomplished and skilled Australian potter. His ceramic pieces are functional ware of superb quality, beautiful and reflective of the Australian landscape.

The influence of Japanese pottery of the Muromachi period (13th and 14th century AD), the era of the six ancient kilns, or districts is paramount in his work. Each ‘kiln’ or district had distinct characteristics governed by its environment, the clay of the area where they were made, the pots, with wood ash dripping down their sides, subject to the vagaries of the wood used in the kilns. David loves the expansive size and loose style of pots from Shigaraki and the large storage jars of Tokoname that were not always regular. They are constantly a wealth of inspiration to him.

David has been working in clay for over 40 years. His extensive experience and artistic vision is evident in each piece. David is meticulous in his craftsmanship, ensuring that the components of all pieces he makes, handles, feet, spouts, lids are all precisely crafted ensuring functionality, or usefulness. Teapots will pour, handles are comfortable to hold,  lids fit, and feet take the eye to the shadow line where pot meets table giving it an uplifting presence. The attention to detail means that each piece is not only useful, but also brings great joy to the user.
